CorDEX UT500 Ultrasonic Tester

The UT500 is an intrinsically safe ultrasonic testing device which measures metal thickness for non-destructive testing (NDT) and predictive maintenance on pipelines and fixed equipment within hazardous areas.

The dynamic, handheld device has been developed by North Yorkshire-based CorDEX Instruments to detect corrosion in metal. It can quickly and safely measure metal thickness to establish the extent of corrosion and has been developed to address concerns about asset integrity.

Tested for Zone 1 IIC T4 hazardous areas, the tool can be used offshore without needing to obtain ‘hot work’ permits – making it ideal to detect integrity issues on oil and gas platforms.

The UT500 is fitted with CorDEX CONNECT, a programme which uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to tag every thickness measurement with a specific location, date and time. The tool can locate and log up to 1,000 measurements, meaning it can be used for days or weeks in the field before the data is downloaded.

Once downloaded to a computer, a software programme collects and organizes the data to provide accurate corrosion analysis and help to predict potential failures. A unique corrosion mode helps identify thinning spots and MultiECHOTM technology improves measurement accuracy on uneven surfaces.

Designed for rugged environments, the device’s over-moulded body protects a 3.1 inch colour screen and has large, well-spaced buttons that allow users ease of operation, even when wearing gloves. The dual-element, 4MHz transducer is adjustable up to 10Hz with accuracy of +/- 0.05mm.
